For those of you who follow me on Facebook, you may have seen me share links to Alex Blackwell’s book, Saying Yes to Change, several times. I don’t normally share stuff multiple times (I prefer to share new stuff), but I have a crush on this book. Full disclosure: This is NOT an affiliate product. I make no money from this book (Amazon just makes it too much of a hassle for non-US residents). I just really, really liked the book and think you might, too. Yes, I am a goddamn saint.
What the book is about
While the title suggests that the book is about change, it’s actually about much more than that: Alex doesn’t just make the tired old argument for why change is good (blah, blah, blah). He takes us through the steps necessary to not only make peace with the process of making change, but also which changes will lead us closer to Who We Really Are. He addresses a variety of beliefs that can sabotage our journey to greater self-awareness and authenticity.
A very personal story
One of the things that really impressed me about the book was that Alex shares so much of his personal life, his struggles, failures and triumphs. He doesn’t just tell us how to do it, he shows us via examples he’s lived through. By describing his darkest days, his alcoholic mother, his being bullied in school, his separation from his wife (and subsequent reunion), and then illustrating how he released the beliefs that resulted from or caused those struggles, he gives us a powerful glimpse into the process necessary to affect major life changes. I was moved by the beautiful description of his current relationship with his wife (awesome for those of us who didn’t grow up with great relationship role models) as well as his open and authentic parenting style. Alex doesn’t hold back – he makes himself vulnerable and lets the reader in, and in doing so, allows us to learn from his powerful examples.
What you’ll get from the book
As you probably know by now, I’d never publish anything here that doesn’t provide a great deal of value and that philosophy extends to any books or products I might recommend. This book contains no fluff and no BS (huge requirement of mine). It’s written from the heart with authenticity.
Along with the personal examples, Alex asks powerful questions which will get you thinking about your life or specific situations in a new way. I had to stop reading on several occasions to feverishly write down insights which were prompted by the book. You’ll also find techniques to help you live more authentically, discover your self-worth and raise your self-esteem.
One caveat
While I can’t really say anything negative about the book, I do have one caveat, specifically for readers of this blog who really resonate with the way I explain things. Instead of talking about our higher selves or the Universe, Alex talks about God. This isn’t at all an issue for me; I have no trouble translating concepts into my own language, and quite frankly, he really doesn’t overdo it (God is mentioned pretty heavily in only one chapter). He simply uses slightly different terminology. But if reading about God makes the hairs stand up on the back of your head because you haven’t yet quite gotten over your Catholic School torture education, then some of the wording may bother you. On the other hand, maybe you’re ready to change that.

I did a tweet about your post. (Thanks for having the easy tweet box.)
I’m not religious myself but I’m used to people using the word God. As a kid I went to church every Sunday. I just have too many unanswered questions that dampen my ability to believe in something so specific.

Thanks Glynis! You’re in.
For me, it doesn’t really matter if people say God or the Universe or whatever, as long as I resonate with the message underneath, and I do here. If someone was talking about fire and brimstone that would be different. It’s about empowerment for me. You can look at God in an empowered way or not. You can look at the Universe in an empowered way. Or not. Semantics aren’t important. It’s the perspective that counts.
Huge hugs!
