The Letter To the Universe – Manifest Whatever You Want In Twenty Minutes

Post image for The Letter To the Universe – Manifest Whatever You Want In Twenty Minutes

by Melody Fletcher on March 11, 2012

I’ve written pretty extensively about the need to release beliefs, about raising your vibration, the importance of your emotions and how to line up your energy with what you want. This site and blog are full of information about different beliefs, how they may manifest in your reality and how to shift your perspective to a better feeling place. Clearly, I believe that it’s important to understand how the Law of Attraction works and why the stuff that’s happening in your life is happening.

However… sometimes, when you’re feeling stuck or desperate, when you need something to happen quickly and you have no idea how that might come about, explanations don’t help much. What you need is a quick and dirty technique to help you release your resistance and get you back on track. And today, my lovelies, I shall share one of my favorite techniques with you:  Writing a letter to the Universe.

It’s simple, it takes about twenty minutes, and it works. Fast. I’ve used it with great success in my own life many times. One caveat: This technique is best for emergent situations. You’re in a bind and you need something to happen fast. The more desperate, the better. I haven’t had as much success with it on long term goals or big things (like career changes, etc. where lots of beliefs are involved). Of course, this could just be me. Try it for yourself and see.

For example, a few years ago, I had made a commitment to a friend. I keep my commitments. It’s important to me. But a new and much better opportunity came up, and well, I really wanted to take advantage of it. I didn’t want to let my friend down, but I also didn’t want to miss out on this wonderful chance. I was really conflicted about it and had no idea what to do. I wrote a Letter to the Universe. What I really wanted was to take advantage of the new opportunity, but for my friend to not only NOT be mad at me, but to understand completely. I wanted to have my cake and eat it, too. I wrote the letter at night. The next day, I sat down with my friend and explained the situation. Even though I’d been so stressed about telling her, I found the perfect words and she heard me completely. She wasn’t angry. She was happy for me. She completely understood and told me that in my position, she’d do the same.

This may seem like something small (it was actually a rather large commitment), but avoiding a major argument with someone I care deeply about is pretty important to me. After that, I started to use the Letter every time I found myself really stressed about anything imminent. I had no time to figure things out. A volatile business meeting the next day, an apartment search for which I had very little time, an interview for a major job promotion, etc. And each time, the Letter allowed me to release my resistance, line up with what I wanted and get me the results that I was after. Ready to hear how to use it? Here we go:

Step 1: Dear Universe…

Sit down and begin writing a letter. You can just open a text file on your computer or you can make a little ritual out of it by using beautiful stationary and a special pen. It’s up to you. Do whatever feels right.  Date the letter and begin with “Dear Universe, “.

Step 2: Describe where you are right now

Tell the Universe where you are right now.

For example: “Dear Universe, I have one month to find a new apartment and I feel totally stressed out about it. The landlord came by today and told me that I have to move. There’s nothing I can do.”

Step 3: State your fears

List all the reasons that you’re stressed out. What are you afraid of? What do you NOT want to have happen? Yes, I know that we normally try to avoid focusing on what we don’t want, but here’s the thing: Your fears are your fears. They are valid to you. And I can tell you all day long that the Universe knows what you want, but when you’re in the state of stress, you’re going to answer with “Yeah, but, what about this horrible scenario? And what about that limitation?” You’re scared and you’re stuck on focusing on all the reasons why you’re scared. By listing these reasons, by writing them down, you can hand them over to the Universe, secure that you’ve communicated every last thing you DON’T want. This is a way of “handing off the problems”, or releasing your fears.

For example: “I’m afraid that I won’t find a place in time. I don’t want to live in some crappy, horrible room, with nasty roommates. I’m afraid I won’t be able to afford anything nice or even decent. I’m afraid that I’ll be homeless or I’ll have to go and beg friends to stay on their couch. I’m afraid I won’t even have time to look for a new place, what with work and all…”

Keep going until you feel that you’ve stated all of your fears and everything you’re worried about. Just getting it all out will already help a little bit.

Step 4: Tell the Universe what you want

Now that you’ve gotten all the fears and doubts out of your system, go ahead and tell the Universe what you are looking for. What do you need? What do you want? This is where you want to make only positive statements. Keep writing until it feels really good. You don’t have to edit, just keep writing until everything you’re stating feels good.

For example: “I want a place that I can afford (this doesn’t feel quite right, because there’s still fear in there that you can’t afford it). I want a place that I’ll afford easily (feels better). The apartment is close to my work and has easy access to public transportation. It’s central, and surrounded by all the shops I need. It’s bright, full of natural light and the other people in the building are all really nice. I don’t have to look for the apartment, it just kind of finds me. It’s easy. I can’t believe how easy it is. The landlord is amazing and wants me as his tenant. In fact, he only asks me for a small deposit so that it’s easier for me to afford the move. Even the move itself is easy. My friends help me and then we have a little party in my new place. I can’t believe how amazing my new apartment feels. It’s cozy and homey and the previous tenants even left me some amazing furniture. I love it. It showed up in plenty of time and I didn’t have to worry at all.”

Notice how, over time, the writing style switched from something you want, to something that already exists (“the apartment IS this and that…”), to something you already possess (“I can’t believe how easy it was…”). As you get more and more into the vision of what you want, you’ll get more and more into the energy of already having it. If your writing style starts to change, LET IT. This isn’t about grammar. It’s about lining up your energy. Get so into your vision and keep writing about it, until you can see yourself there – in your new apartment, having found it and moved into it easily. Feel the relief of it. There’s nothing to worry about. You’ve already got it and you’re looking back on how you worried and you’re seeing how ridiculous it was to be so stressed out. It all came together so beautifully! Now, you’re really just telling the Universe about it, because you’re so excited.

Step 5: Thank the Universe for a job well done

And that brings us to the next step. Tell the Universe “Thank You” for fulfilling your wish. It’s done. What you want is on its way. You don’t have to worry about it. You can just sit back and expect it to happen. Tell the Universe how awesome it is, how creative, how amazing and how you’re in awe about how it led you and this apartment together.

When you do this, you get into the state of gratitude or appreciation, and you’re doing so on the subject of what you want. This is a huge step in lining up your energy.

Step 6: Let it go

Fold the letter (if it’s on the computer, print it out), sign it (you can add XOXO or anything you like), place it in an envelope and address it to the Universe. Now, you can put it in a special box, or burn it, or throw it in the ocean. It doesn’t matter. People use all kinds of methods to help them let things go. And that’s what you’re going to do now: Let it go. You’ve “sent” this desire and all the associated fears and stress off to the Universe. I like to put my letters in a box and look at them years later (DO NOT go looking into your box to see what hasn’t manifested yet! Don’t go through the box often.) It’s fun to see how worried I was about stuff that did then, indeed, come to be easily. It really helps me not get as freaked out about things now.

Trust that you’ve placed your request with the Universe, and that LOA is on the case. There’s nothing more you have to do. Expect your desire to show up, and do your best to go about your day while feeling good. Whenever you start to stress out about it, remember that you’ve handed your problem off to the Universe and it’s taken care of. It’s not your responsibility any more.

Again, I’ve used this technique on several occasions to shift my energy quickly. It helped me release feelings of hopelessness and desperation and align with positive expectation, which then allowed what I wanted to come into my reality.

What do you think? Have you used a technique like this before? What were the results? Do you have favorite little manifesting techniques? Try writing a Letter to the Universe and tell us how it went! :)

Hi Melody
I know you had mentioned before that you believe the energy of people’s questions or what not sometimes lead you to write certain posts. WELL….my energy must have been screaming to you because this is exactly the type of thing I need right at this moment! I have done a lot of written affirmations in the past and other forms of written work but with this, allowing yourself to express and get out the negative stuff is a good suggestion because with the weight of it, just pretending it is not there does more harm than good sometimes. I am literally going to do this right now!

Yay Kelli! This post really wanted to come out and I wrote the whole thing in an hour. So clearly, not just you, but many others needed to hear this.

I also find that when you get your fears and doubts down on paper, it helps to let them go. You have to acknowledge and validate where you are right now. That helps you to move on. This exercise really helps to do that. I’m so glad it was helpful to you! Let me know how it goes! :)

Huge hugs!

Hey Melody,

I’ve definitely heard the technique of writing out your intentions/desires but I love your template here. It has so much more honesty and depth than the typical “dear universe, give me what I want” letters.

Step 3, writing out your fear, is super important and a lot of advice will tell you to simply ignore what you’re afraid of. Big mistake. Writing it out like that makes what you DO want so much more clear and you’re able to release the fears more easily. That’s great advice.

Step 6 is perhaps the hardest – letting go of the desire. The more you keep looking for it, the more you reinforce it as not being here, if that makes sense. But like you said, you just have to recognize that it’s not your problem anymore, you can turn the worry over to the Universe, and that feels great.

Melody Fletcher March 11, 2012 at 21:29

Hey Andrew,

I think the Step 6 difficulty is why this technique works better with short term goals. With long term goals there’s a lot more time to doubt and stress out about it. Will it really come? Why isn’t it here yet? Etc. It comes down to focus, of course. The better we are at focusing in a good feeling place, the faster we get what we want.

Thanks for chiming in!

Huge hugs!

Melody:
I love this post and the idea of writing a letter. Thanks for really explaining step by step how you go about it. I really can see how the discipline of writing it all down really allows it to seep and be embraced by your mind. Great post.

Thanks so much Sibyl! And you’re so right – the sequence of getting the fears and doubts down on paper and then “creating” the scenario that’s wanted really help the mind to get on board. If the mind is worried that different fears will not be considered, that the scenario that’s coming might not be what’s actually wanted, then it tends to get in our way by jumping in with lots of negative “what if” scenarios. But if we can convince the mind that all the bases are covered, it tends to leave us to it and we can focus where we actually want to. (There is a method to my madness…) :P

Hi Melody
I just wrote my letter and I cannot believe how much better I feel. I feel like I have been in a really high energy state lately and the last several days, it is like I am suffering some sort of horrible rebound effect and I have been stuck in a vortex of sucky feelings that were really pulling me down. It is kind of crazy how we can understand the principles and see results in our life but still have those moments…guess it happens to the best of us. It is helpful in a way though because it reveals to me blocks I still hold. Just wish it was not so uncomfortable sometimes!

Melody Fletcher March 11, 2012 at 21:38

OMG Kelli. You are not the only one. I have been experiencing extreme contrast lately, as has everyone I know who is even somewhat sensitive to energy. Our resistance is coming up to be released, which is s very good thing. But yeah, I’m getting hit hard and fast and there doesn’t seem to be a lot of downtime in between. It can get a bit tiring. But then, when I get a bit whiney, I realize that this is what I asked for. It’s what I intended. I want to go higher and higher, and that’s what I’m doing. Well, a side effect of that process is anything that is keeping me from going there is going to come up to be released. I’ve found naps are really helpful, as well as doing lots of deliberate exercises that help us feel good. The key is to remember that when you start to feel really inundated by a blockage, just go general. Switch the subject and go feel good about puppies or whatever. This will not take you away from “fixing” the other issue. It will actually help by raising your energy. But it’s hard to remember that sometimes when you’re being pulled through the muck by your resistance… :)

Hang in there! And I’m so glad this letter technique brought you some relief. :)

Huge hugs!

Pretty cool exercise miss — was it inspired by something in particular?

I feel pretty comfortable/confident right now, but I’ll keep it in mind for the right time.

Even still, I love telling the universe what I adore, and I’m open to sharing that… so here:

Dear Universe,
Thank you for my strong, increasing, solid evidence of my own worthiness and success, in all areas of my life. Thank you for my team and I teaching others from a stable environment and platform that naturally shares timeless, sexy success. Thank you for specific, detailed conversations with others about how well we’re all thriving and how passionately the world supports us. Thank you fore the ease & confidence n telling people the opulent price of my living arrangements and knowing that just hearing me say it inspires them to desire more. Thank you for the impressive amount my company pays in salaries + bills, and for giving me comfort in showing off & shining every aspect of Ryze’s success in graceful ways. Thank you for a version of me who lives luxury and by doing so, inspires everyone to more with every breath. Thank you for the respect, admiration, and attention living like this commands. Thank you for even more reasons for why I live so spiritually and materially well.

F*** yes, thank you life.

Melody Fletcher March 11, 2012 at 21:42

YAAAAAAAY Jason!!!! That’s awesome! You did a little rampage of appreciation (Abe term) here. I love it!

I answered an email from a reader the other day and suggested they try this letter technique. I remember reading about writing a letter to the Unvierse, years ago, but don’t quite remember where. It didn’t lay out this exact process, just mentioned addressing a letter to the Universe and asking for what you want and then letting it go. I found that when I wrote out what I didn’t want first, I achieved a lot more relief. I tweaked the technique over the years until it really felt right.

When I wrote about it in that mail, I couldn’t quite believe that I’d never shared the technique on my blog. But I suppose the timing had to be right and I was inspired at just the right time. Like always. :)

Huge thanks for your rampage!!

Hey Glynis!

Remember to leave the HOW up to the Universe. That’s not your job. Just focus on what you want and keep imagining that you already have it. What does that feel like? Thank the Universe that you already have it. Wasn’t it easy? It may take a while to get into that state, but work on that and forget about the how. :)

Then, give us an update! I’d love to hear how you get on.

Lou March 11, 2012 at 22:20

My Dearest Melody, Years ago I found myself in a very dark place, I had lost my job, could’nt find work, my marriage was failing, nothing but nothing was working for me. This went on for a long period of time and being a very spiritual person, I begged the universe for insight. Why did my life suck, why all these negative forces around me, what did it all mean? One night, after several years, I RECEIVED insight through a vision (too powerful to be called a dream, the dream was not elusive as dreams are, this one I was to forever remember as it came from a different source). The vision showed me walking down a very narrow and dark hallway*, at the end of the hallway there appeared a small room, no funiture, just a small dimly lit room with nothing in it except my father!

I was not with my parents at the time, my then wife and I had a apartment in New York, thousands of miles from them. This vision made no sense to me at all, anyway, as I approached the room where my father was standing, I heard the flapping of “Wings” behind me and before I could turn, a locust (could have been a grasshopper), landed on my shoulder then jumped from my shoulder onto my dads shoulder, where it jumped up into the air and turned into the most beautiful “Butterfly” I had ever in my lifetime seen. From there the vision ended and I was left with more questions than answers. The vision made absolutely no sense to me, and as I stated, my parents were no where near me and there was no correlation between the vision and what I was experiencing then. NOT THEN. I thought often, what did it mean, It just makes no sence! and put it out of my head.

Well, time passed, nothing was presenting to me in my favor and soon found myself at lowest point of my life. My wife asked for a divorce and with no where else to go, I ended up in my parents home far, far away from my beloved children only to see them 2-3 times a year. I resented my wife (not hated) for many many years, not for wanting the divorce ( I could never keep someone from their happiness and freedom if that was what they wanted), but for keeping me away from my children, who mean my lifes core to me. This ate me up inside for 10 years, and during that time I prayed for this feeling to go away for I did’nt want to harbor this inside of me making me miserable and depressed.

Wait for it……

After many years of praying it was finally gone, one day I awoke and found that I no longer felt that resentment towards my wife and have since then told her so. I was so much relieved and so thankful to God for having taken this burden from me that I decided to write him a letter. It was a pleasant day, nice temp, so I took my writting pad outside and I began to write.

Instantaneous Response…

I kept thanking God over and over and over for this relief, that’s how overwhelming it felt to me, even my eyes swelled with that pure sensation of love toward him for I now may be able to experience some measure of happiness in my life now,(still can’t), and had been relieved of a tremendous burden that kept me from forgiving my wife for my giving up everything precious to me. At the close of the letter I asked God if this was what was to be, me here with my dying father (Mom had already passed a year before).
I signed the letter and reflected for a few seconds when a beautiful, beautiful, butterfly came streight for me and poised itself in the MIDDLE OF THE LETTER, LOOKING DIRECTLY AT ME! I wasn’t scared or startled, just in awe that my reply was right there in front of me, no sooner than I had asked. It sat there for what seemed a long time. Finally I said” ok, I understand now, will you please take this letter to him! (of course not litterally). AS SOON as I said that, it took off from whence it came and I was left sitting there to contemplate what had just happened.

The Meaning…
Yes, I was meant to find myself with my ailling father, there alone the both of us would be renewed (locust conversion to the butterfly), though our sufferring and experiences away from the ones we loved most, we both would be renewed spiritually, we would be transformed into even more spiritual beings. NOW it ALL made sense, the vision was true, precise, with no room for misinterpretation. Thankfulness is an EXTREMELY powerful tool….
P.S. that Saturday I had a big tribal tattoo of a butterfly inked onto my arm,(tribal because the indians did the same if it had a deep meaning for them)…

Lou…

Melody Fletcher March 12, 2012 at 16:32

Wow Lou,

Thank you SO much for sharing this powerful story. It’s it wonderful when you allow that kind of clarity and you look back and realize that everything makes sense? Those moments are so powerful and life changing.

I adore butterflies. I’ve often seen them used by the Universe to signal connection (at least in my life). If I ever got tattoo, I’d have to get a butterfly, I think. And I love tribal tattoos, so I’m totally cheering you on. :)

Congratulations on letting go of all that resentment and pain. It will continue to get better. Just keep focusing on how you feel, reach for thoughts that feel continuously better, and relax. Everything is happening perfectly. You don’t have to wait for some future epiphany to be able to look back on this moment and see its perfection. You can do that now. :) I’m sure the butterfly tattoo will be a powerful reminder for you to do that.

Philip F. Harris March 11, 2012 at 23:24

DEAR UNIVERSE, I’M NOT SURE HOW MUCH TIME WE HAVE and I am not sure this will do any good. I know that we are responsible for our own reality and I know that no one will come to save us, regardless of what the religious die-hard may say. I know that we have free will and that is why the Universe will not interfere in our evolution. WE are responsible for whatever happens to us-as it should be.

I know that you listen to the extent that we listen. We and the Universe are one. It is my hope that others will listen to this apology and perhaps take appropriate action to end this insanity. So, here goes.

HERE ARE MY FEARS!
Human history is a trail of lies, bloodshed, deceit and greed. I am sorry for all the wars that never solved a single thing but which were fought for the many for the benefit of the few. We really are ignorant. I am sorry the millions that we wasted-the women, the children and young men and my concern is that we may do this again.

We committed murders in the name of righteousness and some perverted concept of god, (small ‘g’ on purpose). I am sorry that we destroyed ancient information, old religions, and that we killed those who followed a different path. I am sorry for wisdom lost and nothing gained. I am sorry we brutally murdered pagans, Jews, Muslims and Christians and those that followed the Great Spirit. My concern is that we are and will continue to do this.

We have committed genocides and ethnic cleansings. Where does one begin with this list? We have wantonly destroyed cities and civilizations to further our own power: Native Americans, Slavs, Poles, Croats, Serbs, Jews, Africans, and on and on and on. How can there be any excuse for these actions? Power and greed-ah yes-the answer to all.

We perverted the messages of all who have come to set us straight. I am sorry for the Christian church, the Mosque, the temple and all of the self-serving institutions that promote the erroneous concept of good versus evil. Me good-you evil-how stupid! But we are still doing this and there seems to be no end in sight.

We rape, torture and destroy people’s minds for no good reason. Like there would be a good reason. I am sorry that we have dropped napalm on women and children. That we have used bombs, rockets, swords, guns, atomic bombs and literally any means at our disposal to rid ourselves of so-called enemies-you know-those evil people. I am concerned that we are on the verge of doing this again.

I fear, for others, their loneliness, sadness, broken hearts, sorrow, despair, alienation, desperation, apathy and all of those emotions that have no place in a loving Universe.

There appears to be no end to our greed and corruption, thievery, and all of the crimes that we perpetuate upon one another.

.

I fear we are destroying this beautiful planet. For the animals that we have relentlessly slaughtered, those we have made extinct, for the cruelty. I am sorry for the pollution that will soon end our existence-for global warming and for poisoning our rivers, lakes, oceans and lands. For the sadness we have caused our cousins in all of the kingdoms I am so sorry.

I fear for dreams lost, promises not kept.

I fear that we will not stop this insanity, this all consuming madness that is sending us down the path of total self-destruction.

I used to think that ignorance was the greatest deterrence to human evolution. Now I wonder if that is true. We listen but most do not want to hear. Maybe we are stupid-maybe we will never get IT! How much more can we endure before it all falls apart? The tears blur my vision so I must end this tirade. What do I want? I want the insanity to end! Perhaps I should be more explicit here. I want humanity to wake up!

But know this, dear Universe; I am grateful for the wonders that have manifested in my life and I can have no complaints regarding our final disposition. We reap what we sow. I have been blessed, and merely ask that all of humanity open to the blessing that are freely given, but often ignored.

P.S. I want others to want this, also.
P.S.S. Thank you for not making me wait in lines for holiday shopping and for giving me really good parking spaces.

Philip F. Harris March 12, 2012 at 01:14

There-I feel better. Sorry, I do get carried away! LOL.

Melody Fletcher March 12, 2012 at 16:43

Hi Phil!

Wow. Well, you sure told the Universe what you didn’t want. Good. But you were a bit light on what you DID want. You’ll want to spent AT LEAST as much time focusing on the outcome you want as you did on the unwanted. Allow me (I rampage, too…)

Yes, atrocious things have happened. You have no control over the past. You can control whether or not what happened in the past affects how you feel now. People always do the best they can under the circumstances. When we know better, we do better. Right now, people are waking up and they are starting to figure out that they not only want to do better, but they can do better. They are learning not to judge others for their differences, realizing that war feels awful and that maybe, just maybe, it’s completely unnecessary, no matter what the powers that be say. Right now, more and more people are feeling how connected they are to everything and everyone. They are coming to respect nature and animals more. They are starting to care more about the food they put in their bodies and about how they treat others. They are starting to reject the scarcity mindset, the conflict mindset. They are dropping their defensiveness.
So, SO many are waking up and the numbers are growing every day. Yes, stuff happened in the past, and stuff is happening now. But overall, this is the best time to be alive, ever. NOW is better than it’s ever been. And it’s just going to keep improving. We’re moving in the right direction. :)

I had to laugh so hard when I read your P.S.S., I nearly spit out a bit of my tea. That will teach me not to drink tea while reading your comments… He, he.

Thank you so much for sharing your letter here. I hope my own little rampage was useful. Either way, I’m all smiley now. :D

Huge squishy hugs!

Melody,

Add me to the list of “man, did I need this today!” people. I’ve worked with this kind of letter but it didn’t include everything you’ve discussed (which is probably why they were marginally successful). I’m sitting down to write my letter as soon as I hit Submit.

My energy has been in a very negative place for a while and I haven’t taken the time to examine it. Therefore, it continues to suck. Time to turn things around to where I want to be – where shiny puppies dance!

Thank you soooooo much!!!

Hey Paige,

You’re so welcome! We all get into a funk from time to time. And we stay there until we get so sick of it that we’re not willing to stay there any more. And then, miraculously, an answer shows up – a way for us to get out. So, you manifested this blog post at just the right time. I was just the Universe’s little helper. :P

Brian March 12, 2012 at 01:11

Hi Melody, thanks for the wonderful suggestion!
Since i’m inclined to write long winded letters anyway, no matter if it’s a complaint or a love letter, they are all equally prolix — i guess the universe makes the perfect victim to read my outpourings. Mind you, the fulfillment of my desires is also highly welcome.
I use a similar technique to vent about somebody or something in great length and detail without the risk of being sued for insult and threat. If somebody annoys me, i write a ferocious, evil letter but don’t send it. It’s only written to get things off my chest and aw, how relieved i feel afterwards!

Melody Fletcher March 12, 2012 at 16:49

Hey Brian,

The Universe doesn’t mind long-winded letters. ;) The writing out of the negatives can be cleansing. I’ve been journaling for years and I noticed early on that if I put my negative feelings down on paper, I felt instant relief. But if I then followed that up by writing what I wanted instead, I felt all the better. I think the combination of those two perspectives is incredibly powerful.
Writing an angry letter is a great way to deal with anger in a safe, non-destructive way. You don’t just have to confine that to people, either. You can write a letter to the government, or to abstract things like your body (if you don’t like your body, for example, you may feel powerless against it and venting your anger about it can help you move past it). I’m not surprised that this technique has served you well.

Thanks so much for being part of the conversation!!

Huge hugs,
Melody

Nathalie March 12, 2012 at 01:51

Wow — I never thought of trying a technique like this, will definitely have to give it a try! I’m not sure about what I would do to “let it go”, though. Keeping it in a box to look at years later is kind of interesting, but at the same time, for me, burning it seems more powerfully symbolic. Will have to ponder that one!

Melody Fletcher March 12, 2012 at 16:52

Hey Nathalie,

If you resonate more with burning the letter, burn it. That’s been a powerful way to “release” things in many types of ceremonies (Druid, pagan, shamanic, Wiccan, etc.) Its’ a way to achieve the feeling of release. Whatever helps you get there, do it. It’s all good. You can even make up a little chant while you burn it “I release you to the Universe. Thank you, Universe for receiving this message.” Something like that. Again, whatever helps you get into the feeling of letting go, is the right way for you. :)

Huge hugs!

:D I am glad you’re not looking into my mailbox and a folder named “Vidya” :D I write letters like this all the time – and the effect is amazing, therapeutic and cleansing…you know what I mean. I get fresh energy on a daily basis. I usually do this first thing in the morning – whether it is appreciation or to crib. Seeing it all in writing changes the entire perspective and the good looks better, while the perceived “bad” looks suddenly very diminished.

I’ve started my son off on this habit too. :D

Derrek March 12, 2012 at 09:35

Heya Melody,

Thanks for this. Just last week I was thinking to myself before dozing off at night (I always go through the day’s events, my worries, my stresses, and my questions at night and let sleep do whatever kind of cleansing it can) about a quicker way to manifest things. I was asking “Isn’t there a quicker way? Do we have to do the long stuff all the time?” Lo and behold. ;)

Couple of questions though :

[1] Is it really necessary to print and “send”? Do we have to turn the letter into physical form or can we just, well, save it in a folder called “Universe”, for instance. It’s just that the last time I depended on snail-mail, stamps, and an envelope was, urmmm….I can’t even remember…so actually “sending” a letter feels unnatural to me. Emailing the universe seems right down my alley though. It’s just something I’d be more comfortable doing. Does the letter have to come into physical form in order to be released?

[2] In the case of the apartment above…what should the sender do next? He has already sent the letter. Does he continue to look? If he does, won’t that mean he still lacks the apartment? But he HAS to look, because he’s going to be kicked-out soon. So how does he maintain that level of ‘burdenlessness’, knowing the letter is sent and that he already has the apartment, while still looking for something as though he doesn’t have it? How much effort should he put, how often should he look, and should he strive for the apartment more or should he allow it to come into his reality?

Melody Fletcher March 12, 2012 at 17:04

Hey Derrek,

You always get the answer to your question. You just have to hear it. Bravo for listening. :)

As always, you ask excellent questions! Here you go:

1.) No. You don’t have to send the letter. You don’t have to print it out. If it feels better to you to send an email, as it may for many people nowadays, then do that, by all means. The exercise is designed to evoke certain feelings, to shift your energy and any tweaking that allows you to do that better is totally allowed. :)

2.) The person looking for an apartment should focus on what he wants and then allow the Universe to inspire him. What does that look like? Well, perhaps he could walk through neighborhoods that he likes and focus on all the things he likes about them. He could look at buildings and imagine what it might be like to live in them. Perhaps, along the way, he happens to see a “For Rent” sign. He could put the word out to people he knows, that he’s looking. He could check the Sunday paper and see if any of the ads jump out at him – not desperately searching and calling every ad. But being relaxed (because it’s coming) and just seeing if anything lights up. If it does, then he should call that number. You can certainly open up all the avenues so that it becomes easy for the Universe to get your attention. So, checking the classifieds is a good thing. Obsessing over them is not. And above all, he should continue to focus on what he wants and why he wants it.

This is how I found my current apartment, BTW. I listed what I wanted – a one bedroom, penthouse apartment in the city center that I could afford. First, I started to hunt through the classifieds and looked at a lot of crap. A LOT. Of CRAP. Then, relaxed and just walked around in great neighborhoods, daydreaming. I walked through this amazing neighborhood that I loved but didn’t think I could afford to rent in. But I kept thinking “How great would it be to live here?”

Two weeks after that walk, I looked in the Sunday paper and saw an ad for an apartment in that neighborhood for price I could afford. I thought for sure it had to be a total hole for that price, but decided to check it out anyway. It turns out, it was a bit of a fixer upper, but I saw the potential right away. This was my place. I fixed it up myself (painting, put in a parquet floor, decorated it) And I still love it.

It’s ok to take action, as long as that action feels good, not desperate or obligatory.
I hope that answers your question. :)

Huge hugs!
Melody

Derrek March 12, 2012 at 19:52

It certainly does, Melody. Thanks! :)

Kim September 20, 2012 at 19:24

I was wondering this myself — so glad to have an answer: look, but w/o desperation — so, in other words, keep myself open and make myself available! Kind of like going on an easter egg hunt — excitedly looking for the goodies that you KNOW are there, just barely hidden in those bushes bc they are meant to be found!!

Lori Gosselin March 12, 2012 at 13:53

Hi Melody! This is a great technique (not so down and dirty either!) I subscribe to Notes from the Universe and love hearing FROM the universe, but this is a cool way to talk TO it! In a sense, I do with with my kids all the time – acting in the role of the Universe, I listen to their problems, concerns, asking questions and hearing them. Then I ask them the question: “what do you want?” I know (and I tell them) that once they have clearly stated it, it will all work out and it does.
I bet you get better and better at this letter-writing technique with practice?

Hey Lori,

I love the Notes from the Universe! It’s a great way to start the day. :)

And it’s awesome that you take your kids through this technique. Of course it’s great when we have someone to coach us, but when we don’t, the letter technique is powerful.

I do think we get better at it with time, because we get better at defining our feelings and getting to the bottom of them, and that’s what this is really all about, isn’t it? So, we get better at using the technique for us, at tweaking it until it’s perfect for us. I use this technique a lot. I don’t always write a letter. Sometimes I just do it in my head, and often, I just write it in my journal, but the sequence is the same. State where you’re at, what you don’t want, what you’re afraid of and then what you do want. Shift, shift, shift. :)

Huge hugs!

THE UPDATE:
Dear Melody,
I just have to write and tell you what happened. I read your 20 minutes LOA post. I loved reading it. (As I’ve loved reading all of your posts) Well, I thought, what do I want to manifest??? Then, I remembered how undecided we’ve been about getting a new car. They’re too expensive, but our van has “died”. Should we just fix it for more than it’s worth or take the plunge and get a new or a near new car?? We’ve started looking and googling etc. So, after reading your post I said to my husband, “I’m going to manifest a car this week.” We looked all week with no success but also with no worry. Then our friend called and asked would be interested in a used car with low gas mileage but it’s 12 years, very inexpensive and literally driven by a little old lady back and forth to the grocery store. We drove it, it gets good gas mileage and is 1/2 the price (or more) than the other cars we were looking at. Plus it’s a beautiful car with all the fixings. We’re driving around it in right now.

Thanks Melody! Can you believe that I never even got around to writing the letter just thought about what I would write!!!!

Hi Melody,
Okay, so I did it. I can tell you right now, it’s that step six that’s going to be the tough one. Anything I ever let go of had claw marks all over it. But I’ll definitely do my best. I have to. I’ve often heard the phrase, “Let go and let god”, but my favorite is “Let go or be dragged” which is much more applicable to me.

Thanks,

I’ve used the letter writing exercise many times in life and it truly is cathartic and purposeful at the same time. Your point about using ‘abundant’ language rather than limiting verbiage is spot on.

BUT . . . PLEASE don’t throw ANYTHING into the ocean! We pick up orange and banana peels among the other trash on the beach . . . it’s all garbage. Even flowers thrown into the sea are unsightly and can be toxic to ocean creatures. Writing a letter to yourself is freeing, tossing it into the ocean is not. Be a steward of the Earth and your generous spirit will return ten-fold. : )

Hi Melody,

Wonderful post. I love the idea of writing a letter to the Universe. I appreciate how you explained your process. When I write in my journal, one thing I try to do, is get all my complaints out, so that I don’t carry them around with me all day. These are necessarily major stressors, but it does free up my mind. I like your more formal technique and explanation for those big changes that are needed. Thanks for sharing.

This is an interesting idea. I think I’ll have to try this out with my wife and see what we come up with.

I remember that we did something similar to this about a year ago. We just wrote down all the things that we wanted out of life. I forgot all about it until now. I wonder if I could find it and see how close I am to getting them all. Although I didn’t thank the universe when I did it. I’ll have to do that in my next letter.

Lauren March 14, 2012 at 00:22

Melody,

After the events of today, I just HAD to write and tell you my story. I apologize for it’s length.

I was laid off about 19 months ago and haven’t worked since. I went back to school for 9 months to brush up on current computer technology since that is the area of my Bachelor’s degree earned 16 years ago. While attending this school I learned many things (in addition to my academic material): 1. I am skilled at teaching – I ended up helping my classmates a lot and was told by them I should get into teaching. 2. This school recently became an accredited college and needed instructors with degrees to teach there. So, last October I interviewed with them and the guy I met w/ REALLY wanted to bring me on board. But alas, the last week in December, I received an email from him stating there were no open positions at that time. A HUGE HUGE HUGE disappointment for me because I spent the whole fall focusing on having that job. I told myself everyday I was a full-time paid instructor there. I visualized myself standing in front of a classroom teaching. I was really working hard at using the LOA to manifest this job. I felt completely defeated and kinda lost my faith in the LOA when it didn’t happen.

I hadn’t thought about the place since, thinking the door was shut. Last Wednesday, my therapist said she didn’t think the situation with school was done. I had no idea why she had that feeling. After seeing her, I had an appointment at the school with their new career services lady. She wanted to meet & talk w/ me about some possible opportunities she had. While there I stopped by the Dean’s office to simply say “Hey”. After reminding him who I was he asked for my resume. Then talked about me coming in again for another interview in front of a panel where I would be asked a series of technical questions. This kinda scared me b/c having not been in class in 6 months the information is not readily accessible in my brain (I get rusty quickly when I’m not using it). So, I got a call Saturday morning from the Dean asking me to come in Monday @ 5:30. I thought, “Great, I have the weekend to review”. Unfortunately, my weekend was very busy and not much reviewing happened.

Now I get to the point of my post that has to do with you… I finally got around to reading this article Sunday night and decided to put it into practice. I wrote my letter to the Universe exactly the way you suggested. While writing all my fears I truly felt terrible. But then when I got around to writing was I wanted and how I saw everything coming together I felt so good inside. After I completed the letter I reread the ‘want’ section again to boost the feeling even more. Then I put it in an envelope, put it in my keepsake box and said out loud, “I let this all go. I put it in your hands now, Universe”.

The rest of the night & next Monday morning/afternoon I didn’t get much more reviewing done but it didn’t bother me. I had the belief in my head that whatever questions I was asked I would KNOW the answers. When I got there Monday evening, the same guy took me aside and simply explained the school had a new policy that they don’t hire previous students. But he believed that the new campus President could override that policy in my case. So we met w/ the pres briefly – I barely was able to get a world in. The pres seemed to like me and put it in the hands of the lead instructor. I was then asked to come back Thursday to do a “test teach” in front of other instructors & students. I felt VERY confident in being able to do this.

So, today I’m waiting for an email from this guy to confirm the teaching demonstration appointment. Instead, I get a call from him. He told me to come back in and fill out an employment application and then he’d schedule me into the school’s next term that starts in two Mondays. When I asked about doing the demo, he said it wasn’t necessary because I had already done something similar last fall during my first interview. So, he ended the conversation with a, “Welcome on board”. I couldn’t believe it! I now have a job! My letter to the Universe worked better than I could have ever hoped. No question grilling, no trying to dig the recesses of my brain for immediate answers, no effort at all! It happened all so quickly and so easily. My faith in the LOA is now reaffirmed and will use the letter writing technique again in the future for when I want something immediately.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU, MELODY for writing your post when you did. You’re were very right, there was at least one person who needed to read it! I actually think the job didn’t come through earlier because there were some emotional issues I needed to work on first. But now that’s I’m in a much better, stable place I am truly ready for this to happen and work out well. Thank you Universe – You are magnificent!

Love,
Lauren

This is exactly what this technique is all about. You’re in a clinch, you want something badly and are stressing out. The letter takes all the stress away and gets you focused on what you want. It brings relief (which is the first manifestation) and then results (the second manifestation).

Ooooh, I read your comment three times. It feels so good!!! I love it!!! Thanks so much for sharing your experience here. I’m sure that it will help a lot of people really “get” how to use the letter as well as give them hope and motivation to try it for themselves.

Wow Melody! Thank you for this techique.

I knew I was obsessing about going on a trip, but I was finally able to let go and release this obsession after writing the letter to the Universe.

And how do I know I 100% released my obsession with this desire? How do I know I released it to just let it happen? I can actually feel a nice empty spot on my 3rd chakra now, where the obsession had been sucking my personal power out of me. (I’ve just re-filled the spot with my personal power again, as it should be.)

What a great feeling! What a relief from obsession!

Melody Fletcher June 3, 2012 at 18:06

Hey Matty,

What you want to do is focus on the second half of your letter – the part that stated what you wanted. If you have to, write another letter. State again what you’re afraid of or what you don’t want (and this may have changed somewhat), and then what you want. Then spend some time with that vision and let it feel really good to you. Then, when those doubts come up, redirect your thoughts to the vision of what you want.

It’s not so much about NOT focusing on what you don’t want (or your fears and doubts) as it is about REPLACING those thoughts with ones that focus on what you DO want. You can’t hold 2 thoughts at the same time, so it’s one or the other. Choose the one that feels better and do your best to focus there. It’ll get easier with practice and you’ll feel better and better. And as you feel better, the things you want will start to come into line and show up in your physical reality. :)

I hope that was helpful.

Huge hugs!

Thanks Melody, I’m having a lot of fun with this one! I setup an email for the universe on Yahoo & send letters to this email with the subject line “Request To Manifest.” Because I setup an auto-responder on Yahoo, whenever I send an email there, I get a response back saying “Wishes Accepted! We’re working on it Mike. Now do your part by staying positively focused, attentive, and take action! Still love ya, Universe” haha

hi melody,

i did another letter the last time and still nothing but about 3 days ago i did another letter and burned it and EVERYWHERE i go outside i see LOTS of feathers i can actually say each time im outside i come accross feathers! and not the sames ones, and not in the same places… is this a sign?

thanks,
Matty

Melody Fletcher June 28, 2012 at 00:44

Hey Matty,

That’s great! The last time you did the letter, you found a way to release some resistance and ALLOW. Yes, the feathers are a sign. They make you happy, don’t they? They are a sign that you have aligned with the energy of what you want just a little more. It’s all about letting go and trusting. I know that’s hard, but you did a bit of that and immediately, the Universe brought you some evidence. What brought those feathers was the feeling you achieved by burning that last letter. Focus on that feeling and expect more signs. :)

I’m so proud of you.

Alice July 25, 2012 at 06:22

Ok I’m stumped on part 4. I’m asking for a few things at once because they are all entangled together and need to happen for the other thing to happen.
There’s four things that need to happen.
Two huge answers or three. No four answers and four actions.
They are all related. Don’t know where to start so just asked for answers and a solution.

Wrote so many fears. Then focus on the want but the fears come in. they are unending fears and doubt. Seems like a lie. “the answers will come” OKAY. Well. I step lower “the answers will get hinted at” feels annoying.
It’s just gonna be ok somehow.
I don’t want to say thankyou for ok. I feel like a liar. So I want to be grateful for solutions.
It feels lost.
I go back to the one thing of the four that is easiest to imagine. I put boxes around the things that feel like lies. You are boxed. We’ll come back to you- you need professional help!
So I look at the one thing I can sort of imagine. It’s the most unrealistic one but the most fun to imagine. I go there.
The best I can come up with is “things get better”
It’s not satisfying but it’s ok.
I try to go for more but it’s underlined. 4 pages in handwriting.
I getv stumped again on saying thankyou. It feels false. I can’t imagine the solution.
Try to let go.
Let’s fold up that mess of writing and see.

Melody Fletcher July 25, 2012 at 19:03

Alice,

Don’t write a letter about 4 things at once. You THINK that they are all related but that’s a limiting belief. Separate each one and then try to figure out WHY you want each one. If two seem to be intertwined then perhaps you actually want them both for the same reason. You haven’t gotten deep enough yet, which is why it’s not working.
Find the core of what you’re looking for and it’ll get easier.

This post has more info on that: What to do When the Vibrational Ladder Doesn’t Work.

Core feelings:

Job (one I’d LOVE, can’t just be OK too much hard work and build up to select any crappy thing)
/solution to money issue/way to make own money/business idea and plan/avoid homelessness= SECURITY/ MONEY TO LIVE

SECURITY, LOVE, FRIENDSHIP

SECURITY, HEALTH TO DO ANYTHING, FREEDOM

MONEY, VALIDATION, RELIEF

CALM, HAPPINESS, SECURE, CONFIDENCE (other private issues, these are the core of them)

Ok but that bugs me..I don’t understand general things. I can imagine specific things. I think in specifics.

Melody Fletcher August 13, 2012 at 17:11

Hey Alice,

Going more general when you’re used to thinking specifically can be a real challenge. Try focusing on one of your words. Relief is a good one. Focus on relief. What would it feel like to feel relief? What if things were lighter? Easier? Focus on the feeling and give it some time. It may not work right away (or may not seem to), but with a bit of effort you can shift quite a bit of energy, even if you don’t make it all the way to relief. Just by reaching for it, you’ll be changing your point of attraction (meaning, that you’ll already feel better and you’ll have access to more better feeling thoughts).

Thoughts are manifestations, too. And when you are manifesting specific thoughts, it simply means you’re quite aligned with the energy of that topic. So, when you are manifesting specifically negative thoughts, you’ve spent a lot of time thinking negatively about that subject. You can’t shift from specifically negative to specifically positive. This letter technique takes you from negative to positive, but of course, you sort of have to tailor it to the person and belief. I’ll see if I can come up with another technique that helps people become more general. Let me have a think on it.

Huge hugs!

Jasmine August 26, 2012 at 02:43

Hi, Mel!

I wanted to thank you for writing this blog/article. Just what I needed!! I did it last night and boy I went to sleep feeling so good and happy. I was in a very good all day. I also had a good night sleep as well, and I FINALLY had a good sleep for the first time in a few weeks. So, thank you!!!

Writing is one of my favourite things to do… Even though I think all the time, I talk to myself when I lay down in bed because I think very clearly and better when I lay down. THIS is one of the best techniques for me where I can ACTUALLY express my thoughts, my fears, my feelings. So that way after writing everything, I can read and be like, “Oh yeah, now that makes sense.” ALSO, it’s the best way for me to be able to talk to the amazing, loving Universe because, you see, I am deaf.

I have a question that I wanted to ask you, but right now, I can’t remember. :[ I’m pretty tired, lol. I guess this means I should have a notepad or something with me all the time so when a question pops in my head, I gotta write down! Oh well, I’ll ask you when I remember.

Thank you again for posting this great article!

Melody Fletcher August 26, 2012 at 19:33

You’re so welcome Jasmine. I’m so glad this technique is so helpful to you.

I also use writing to help me work through my beliefs. It’s often easier to let the divine flow when I write everything out, especially when some major resistance has just been triggered. It’s too easy to let the mind wander when something makes me uncomfortable. But in writing, I can stay focused and find my relief.

I know the feeling – so many thoughts, so little time, lol. I have post its all over my desk from little thoughts I don’t want to forget. You will remember though if it’s important to you. No worries.

Huge hugs!

It’s really funny that the example you used for the letter technique is finding an apartment in a short period of time bc that’s the situation I’m facing. So I just wrote my letter and I really got into the second part where I’m stating what I want. I mean I just lost myself writing about how i would feel once I’ve moved into my apartment. And without thinking about it I threw in a lottery win that helps provide me the means to finance a wonderful new apartment. I didn’t really think or worry if it was realistic or not, it was just what felt natural to write even though it’s not directly related to getting an apartment. Its interesting what comes up when you let yourself get carried away in a good way..

Melody Fletcher August 30, 2012 at 19:43

Hey Mimi,

The most important thing is that you feel really good about what you write in the last section. But as you focus on a really good feeling frequency, other thoughts that feel like that will join the ones you’re thinking. They may seem unrelated, but they all feel good. :)

Hi Melody — I just wrote my letter to the Universe and as i got towards the end of it, I noticed that my positive statements in my last section would make really good affirmations. I don’t want to sound desperate or demanding or like I’m nagging the Universe to do its job, but I also think it would be a good idea to say these statements as affirmations. You know, to help keep my own emotional state at a higher vibration. But, the last step is to Let Go, and I’m not sure that repeating affirmations that i stated in my letter would help me to release it to UniverseGOD. (which is my new way of referring to the Power That Is. :) ) Anyway, i feel much better — and oh boy does this work FASTFASTFAST!!! As i was typing this comment, someone came and knocked on my door BRINGING ME SOME OF EXACTLY WHAT I HAD ASKED FOR IN MY LETTER!!! OMGOMGOMGOMG!!!! and I haven’t even signed it yet!!
whew. taking a deep breath.
so, anyway, what do you think about creating affirmations from my letter to UniverseGOD? good idea or too much?? Thanks!!

Melody Fletcher September 20, 2012 at 22:45

Hey Kim,

You probably saw this coming but…

If saying the affirmations makes you feel good – do it.
If it reminds you of what you don’t yet have, leave it.

But then, you already knew that, didn’t you?

Smooches!

Melody,

I spoke with you on the phone last saturday concerning body image/weight issues. I have been feeling better and trusting the universe more and more. This post came popping out at me to read and I did and it felt so good! I wrote my letter and let it go. I immediately felt so much relief and peace. I know you suggested that this may not work with issues with a lot of resistance but I feel so much better already. Today on my way to class I even heard a girl on the phone talking to someone saying “You have a perfect metabolism.” I know it wasn’t at me, but I feel like the Universe intended it for me.
I am trusting in my body and Universe more and more.

Thanks Melody!

I am desperate. I am going to lose my job working for the most wonderful women in the world tomorrow. She will be getting a new assistant in a reorganization. She wants me but has no control in the decision. We are being separated and do not want this to happen but it is going to happen anyway. Do you think the universe is separating us? Do you think writing a letter to the universe will help us? Thank you for any advice you can give me and for this wonderful blog of yours.
Barbara

Melody Fletcher October 11, 2012 at 11:23

Hey Barbara,

Yes, a letter can help. But here are a few guidelines:

Figure out what you really want: It’s not to work for this woman. WHY do you want to work for her? How does it feel? What do you like about it? What do you get out of that situation? Go deeper.

What are you afraid of? What do you think will happen if you are separated? What are you afraid a new boss will be like?

If you are being split up, there’s a reason it’s happening. I’m guessing it’s partly a mirror of your fears (that you can’t get what you want without this relationship and have made your happiness dependent upon it), and part that you’re ready for the next step (which you can’t allow if you keep holding on to this situation, thinking it was the only way in which happiness could come to you). Don’t be afraid of change. If you allow it, your awesome situation could well become even more awesome. There’s no limit to how good it can get.

So, write the letter with your real fears and real desires in mind and it’ll help. :)

Huge hugs!

Barbara October 12, 2012 at 04:47

Hi Melody,
You are so correct. It’s not about working with her and being afraid of a new boss – it’s about losing our friendship from not working with her. My happiness is dependent upon being with her and work is the only way to be with her at this point in our relationship.
Barbara

Melody Fletcher October 12, 2012 at 16:31

Hey Barbara,

In that case, I’d focus on what the friendship is giving you. Perhaps it’s time to take this relationship to a whole new level, one that wouldn’t be possible when confined to a workplace. There is a dynamic at the workplace, boss/employee – that might make a deeper friendship impossible. This could be a great thing. But don’t assume that you can’t be friends anymore if you don’t work together. Just ask for a solution in your letter, but don’t confine it to a work relationship. There may be something even better waiting in the wings. :)

Melody,
I did send another and your post was lovely but I don’t think a friendship outside the work place is possible. She is very busy and I didn’t get that much of her time at work so I am sure there will not be any time for me now that I am not working for her, I am afraid that there will be no happy ending for me. She will get a new assistant and forget about me. Thank you so much for your encouragement.
Barbara

Melody Fletcher October 17, 2012 at 14:53

Never say never Barbara. If you line up with it, you can manifest it. And if it’s not possible with this woman, than an even better friendship is on the way for you. Don’t assume that change is a bad thing. In my experience, if we’re willing to let it, it’s always leading to something better. Look for the better future instead of mourning what you’ve “lost”. Seriously, it does work. :)

Thanks for your reply Melody. I am a very persistent type person that never gives up EVER on anything but I realize I can’t control others and that is what makes me concerned. I am willing now to go with the change and accept it and then wait to see how it plays out. What do you mean exactly when you say “If you line up with it, you can manifest it.”? Do you mean if I believe it will be okay it will? You are right when you said that there is no way we could become good friends if I work for her – I have thought that many times. Maybe those thoughts were sent to the universe. Thanks again – I love your site and it is so kind of you to do this for all of us.

anna October 10, 2012 at 04:55

I love all your posts! Thankyou for writing them.
I quite forgot the power of writing things down. I seem to go through stages, where I forget that I am constantly manifesting things! :)

Anyway, I would just like to say that I manifested my partner (now of over 3 years) by writing down all of things that I wanted in a partner, and then drawing a circle around it. Put it in a drawer somewhere, and not long after (weeks?maybe a month?) there they were! I’ve done this for a few things, and it really works. I don’t think that the specific method is important, but the act of writing just helps to clarify to yourself what you want. I like that you suggest clarification of what is not wanted also.
I find writing useful for big things, as little things are pretty easy now. I just need to remember to try only to focus on the positive, as I am at a stage of fairly quick manifestation, and recently manifested something that I didn’t want. Well, at first I thought I did want it, but then I realised I didn’t and couldn’t believe that I could change it. How silly of me, of course I can change anything.
Thankyou for reminding me of the power of writing…I will use it soon…

Melody Fletcher October 11, 2012 at 11:24

Li Ng October 18, 2012 at 02:32

Hi Melody,

I am not going to worry what I am writing here is really relevant. I’m still quite a newbie to LOA and I love reading your LOA articles. After reading “The Letter To the Universe – Manifest Whatever You Want In Twenty Minutes”, may I ask whether the person who has written the letter could focus on not having to move to another place and succeed in doing so. This is very similar to the situation I am facing right now and I really, really wish I do not have to move. I would like to tell the Universe that I don’t wish to move. Is there anything that I have to be careful with when I pen the letter?

There is currently quite a bit going on in my life. I want to quickly feel happy again.
Love,
Li

Melody Fletcher October 19, 2012 at 13:18

Hey Li,

Yes, of course you can state that you don’t really want to move. Being honest about what you really want and don’t want is a huge part of this process. So, in the “negative” part of the letter, write that you don’t want to move and that you’re afraid that you might have to. Release that fear. In the positive one, write that it will resolve itself, that everyone involved will be satisfied, etc. Whatever you want the outcome to be and what feels really good to you. You get to want what you want. Give yourself permission to believe that you can have it. :)

Kat October 26, 2012 at 03:31

Hey Melody,

I am just wondering if this is the basis for what a proper prayer should be like? Organized religions’ prayers are fear-based, kind of pleading with God to intervene in times of desperation, all low vibrations, at least that is how I see and understand it.

This method is quite the opposite, where we are clearly releasing the negative, focusing on the positive and our desires, and faithfully leaving the rest to the universe. Jesus also said something like pray incessantly, which I think he meant to let go of worries (which is easier sad and done but we work on it) and line up with the universe and be in that state as much as we can. just something I noticed.

Melody Fletcher October 30, 2012 at 02:41

Thank you so much for including the part about the fears as I have had so much trouble with it. it makes so much sense the way you describe it because the universe knows all about your fears anyway and just suppressing them doesn’t make the positive thing happen as I have found that your fears manifest just as quickly but by giving them to the universe is the the way to acknowledge yourself fully also by becoming clear of your fears you also become clear of what you want.So thank you for that I would never have thought of telling the universe my fears.

Melody Fletcher December 24, 2012 at 14:17

You’re so very welcome Linni. I’ve found that acknowledging out fears helps us to let them go. The key is to acknowledge them and then shift our focus to what we want instead. Otherwise, you just keep harping on about the fears and that’s not helpful. The process as a whole really, really works. :)

Sangeeta December 26, 2012 at 03:54

Hi Melody (What a beautiful name!)
I was just wondering, is it important to write in the letter BY WHEN I would like something to happen? I feel I’d be setting myself up for disappointment if I give it a deadline I want and nothing happens.
Also, what do I do if I am not sure of what I want (am I the only one who is unsure?). I mean, for example, for the year 2013 I want to reconnect with my creative self. I used to be SUCH a creative person, I used to write, make useful stuff out of junk, paint, sketch..and somehow throughout the years I lost touch with the creative side of me. I used to be so happy when I could express myself through creativity and now I cant, its like a mental block. So I want to dedicate 2013 to finding that creativity again. How can I ask for this, when I dont know specifically how to word my request?
Sorry for being a pain!
Thankyou in advance :-)

Melody Fletcher December 28, 2012 at 13:33

Hey Sangeeta,

Thanks so much! :)

I’d advise against putting a deadline, unless it’s urgent and it makes you feel relief to put it. Deadlines tend to put more unnecessary pressure on the manifestation that can slow it down. You’ll get what you want as soon as you line up with it and it will fit perfectly into your life (you won’t get everything you want all at once, for example, because that would not feel good…)

If you’re not sure how to word something, but the gist of what you want. For example, you can simply put “I want to find a way to express myself creatively again in 2013″. That’s not really a deadline, since a year is quite a long time and that shouldn’t create pressure. You don’t have to get more specific than that. Think of the times when you were creative. How did that feel? Get into that feeling of flow.

Also, keep in mind that the best way to encourage creativity is to relax and get happy. Give your brain some space to have creative thoughts (if you’re too busy to be creative, it can’t flow) and raise your vibration using any method possible. Just get happy doing whatever it is that’s easy for you to be happy about. That encourages and opens up the creative juices like nothing else. Write about how it feels to you to be creative. Put that in your letter. You don’t have to worry about the HOW. That’s the whole point of the letter exercise. You let go of the HOW. :)

I hope that was helpful.

Huge hugs!!

Ernesto December 31, 2012 at 14:12

Hello Melody!

Thanks for such a wonderful article! Truly happy that I chanced upon it. Melody, I notice that there are a variety of techniques that involve creating a “letter of intention” or list of wishes to the universe. Yours is for a single immediate need that you only need to focus once and practically not mind about it afterwards. Other blogs advise to make a list and then focus on it everyday, for instance 21 days, visualizing on the wishes that they have become true. I hope every style of doing the list works. I like your style because I just did it and I found myself creating real yearning emotions with strong beliefs that it will happen. Is it possible that I can modify your technique by making a letter of more than one wants or needs? Hope to hear from you soon!

Happy and prosperous new year!

Melody Fletcher January 6, 2013 at 01:01

Hey Ernesto,

The real key is in how you feel. If you can write a letter about more than one thing and feel great while doing it, it’ll work just as well. But if it doesn’t feel good, it may be easier to separate the topics. It always comes down to how you feel. The technique itself is just a tool to help you work yourself into a better feeling. :)

Hi Melody,

First off I want to thank you so much for posting this wonderful article with the steps written so precisely! I really appreciate and love your great purpose out there in helping us! I certainly believe a lot of people are feeling the same for your articles! :)

Anyway I’d like to share how I use your technique. I type the letter to the universe and instead of printing it out I sent an email to my Future Me, see the website: http://www.futureme.org/. By delivering the email on a specified future date, I get back what I wrote in the past and can verify how it went. This way you can feel touched or suprised if the things you want turns out to become reality when you read the received email, which you already have forgotten about.

Have a nice wonderful day!

Melody Fletcher February 16, 2013 at 18:53

That’s a fantastic suggestion Yanny! Thanks so much for sharing it here! And thanks for your great feedback. I really appreciate it. :)

Huge hugs!!

I am in the same situation described in the article where i have to find a room in a month’s time. I went to do a search for a picture to ‘thank’ the universe and i found this website. It was beyond coincidence and i didn’t feel that i needed to type the letter out for me because exactly what my fears were and what i wanted is already written here.
Nevertheless, i felt better after writing the letter. Finding this article was a sign from the universe that it’s helping me especially during this hard time as i’ve been facing a lot of extreme changes and haven’t settled down in this place as i’ve only just got here in less then a month.
So i’d like to thank the universe for helping me find this article and the writer.
Thank you so much :3

Dear Melody,

I just chanced upon your article while surfing through and I am glad that I did. I have tried almost all techniques of LOA for the situation I am undergoing. It is tough to stay positive continuously. Still I tried. Today, I feel Universe has come up with the perfect solution to my issues through your article. I feel as if a burden has lifted off my heart. Thanks dear Melody for shining a light. I shall definitely write this letter today itself and keep you posted of my results. Thank you once again for sharing this article. God bless! :)

I have used this technique several times. Thank you for reminding me. This is the best description I ever saw in written form about doing such an exercise! I did it before – but was not doing all the steps as described – just, you know, doing it. Yours is gorgeous!

Dezzyre March 27, 2013 at 02:01

This actually works for me!!! No kidding.
What’s funny is that I used to write letters to the universe all the time when I was a little girl. At the time I thought that the journal that I wrote in was magical (silly, I know)because everything I wrote did come true including some negative things. I no idea what LOA was of course, but I believed in magic and Michael Jackson(because he’s magical) But I stopped writing in it because at school some kids got a hold of my journal and fun of me and played “keep away”. Anyway, it freakin’ works, for me anyway.

hypnogypsy April 10, 2013 at 20:32

I recently read an article after reading small parts of the book, The Secret by Rhonda Byrne. After searching on Google I discovered a website where a lady talks about writing the Universe a letter. So after reading her articles I got goose pimples all over my body. I decided to…..

Write the letter:

Much to my surprise while writing a letter I felt calm, happy, I cried, I laughed, and my body tingled!

I realized the things that were wrong in my life…

So I asked the Universe to help me with that, and I thanked the Universe for already doing the things that I’ve asked.  Because I realized the Universe has no time constraints, the Universe doesn’t know the past from the present, it only knows that things are done! After I wrote this letter, I just felt like things would get better, or in fact already are better.

Thank You!

For the people that don’t like to read…

There’s a video on my channel, if you can’t write I don’t think the Universe would mind if you made a video thanking it.
Send me your video on my video.
@ Youtube.com/HypnoGypsy

And remember the Golden Rule!
Thank s/he whom which made the Universe also! And, If you’re nice and kind, or help others, they will do the same back, and it makes you feel good!

Carolyn April 15, 2013 at 14:48

Hey Melody. Thanks for this article. It really resonated with me at a time I truly needed to hear and try that…so I did. And it was awesome. I felt such a relief afterwards. It was like a heaviness in my heart was lifted. I was truly thankful to the Universe for it was done..its done, its done its done. That was Saturday and on this Monday afternoon I am still doing my best to remain upbeat and trusting of the Universe to bring it about. I am calm in general although I get few panicky moments here and there. But as advised I am reminding myself that the Universe has got this and I need not worry. I thought of re-doing the letter again if only to feel as good as I felt at the end of writing it earlier. But I found rehashing the “where I am right now and my fears” did not feel right. After all I had turned these over to the Universe right? So I would like to know what other techniques can I use that you have found just as effective to remain in high vibration for those “weak” moments?

Barbara May 8, 2013 at 04:15

Sorry to say that I have sent many letters to the universe and never did it work for me. The things I asked for never came to fruition. The things I didn’t want to happen happened. It just never worked for me and I follow the guidelines precisely.

Heather May 14, 2013 at 23:14

Hiya Melody!

Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom, I clearly needed to see this as I stumbled upon it looking for help on manifesting a new home. I just have one quick question if thats okay. I wrote out the letter following the guidelines you spelled out, but was wondering if there was any harm in being too specific. I know the exact home that I want. My husband and I have put an offer on it, though there is another couple that have also put an offer on it and the owner has agreed to go with them for the meantime. Is it wrong for me to write the letter putting all of my intention on that specific house, rather than listing all the criteria I am looking for as you did and hoping to find something that fits, whether it be the one we put an offer on or not. Its just that I have my heart completely set on this one house – it had the most amazing feeling to it, I just cant get it out of my head. We were even admiring it before it came on the market, so in a way I almost feel like we manifested it to begin with. Oh whoas me. I wrote the letter, so now what I need to do is release it to the Universe as I am clearly still stressing over it big time :)

Thanks again for your amazingness and all that you do and put out there in the Universe that makes everyone else’s lives better. If you do have a moment I would love to hear your thoughts on being specific in these types of letters, etc.

Chris May 29, 2013 at 17:22

I tried this yesterday, but out of curiosity, does anyone know the time effectiveness of this method? If you’ve tried this, and your desires were fulfilled, how long was it?

DGO June 3, 2013 at 04:31

I just thought i’d share my experience with the LOA and manifestation. Like many others who are searching for answers I have tried many ways of using the LOA and of course I was skeptical so I wanted to test it out first.

Test1 – i tried to manifest a furry black dog. Not any common dog. Just one I had in my mind. I focused on it and then I thought about it once in a while but not much because it didnt mean anything to me. I was having a bad week at work when I saw the EXACT dog walking past me like nobody’s business. I almost spat my coffee out from laughing. I thanked the Universe, angels, God, whatever you want to call it.

Test2 – the blue feather test. Of course I just had to push the LOA further. So i focused on a blue feather. I pictured it and what shade of blue I wanted it to be. Two days after I saw the dog, I saw the blue feather in the EXACT shade of blue i wanted. :)

Well thats all I needed to BELIEVE and confirm that it does indeed work. Then I started finding ways to manifest things I wanted faster. I found a meditation technique on youtube. I watched it yesterday morning and the “thing” i wanted to manifest was a guy im really interested in. Not just for a fling but I think he’s the one and fate brought us together. Oh yeah, i meditated yesterday morning and saw him last night. :)

I think its very important you dont set time limits for things you want.

I can’t wait to master the LOA.

Daniel June 5, 2013 at 12:25

Hi Melody,

I have some honest feedback to give and I hope you give me your explanation.
I truly appreciate your suggestions. It makes sense. practical and intelligent. In fact, your blogs have helped me to believe in LOA. As I said I really love your blogs. But when I saw that you are selling your stuff or trying to make money of it, it does question your credibility that you are just trying to help people. You know this is one of the main complaints of anti-LOA people. Seriously, why do you guys try to sell the stuff? You can just genuinely try to help people (if that is what your after) without any monetary motives.

Melody Fletcher June 5, 2013 at 12:41

Hey Daniel,

Thanks for asking this question. I think this is something that a lot of people wonder about, so I’m happy to answer it. But I’ll be doing so in a blog post, so that everyone benefits. Stay tuned! :)

Huge hugs!

Melody

I wrote the letter as soon as I receive what I am wanting I will let you know.
Today I felt like driving my car in a tree, however I came upon your site and got my composure enough to sit down and write this letter. THANK YOU UNIVERSE.

Dina July 13, 2013 at 03:04

Hi Melody,

I was (am?) at heartbroken and at wit’s end when I stumbled across your “letter to the universe.” I do put stuff “out there” every day but to actually write it down never occurred to me. I just finished and sealed my letter. I honestly don’t feel any better at the moment, but I’m sure it helped. I realized that everything else in the past I have asked for, I have received so I’m sure it will be the same with this. However, this is MUCH MUCH nearer to my heart than I have ever asked for and while I still have a little doubt, I am mostly optimistic. I DESERVE AND EXPECT to receive my miracle and I can’t wait to tell everyone that it really does work!!! :) Thank you Melody! Much love to you!

Hello Melody,

First i want to aplogize for my bad Englisch, but i know you will forgive me.

I have a question for you.
I have set a verry importent goal for me, and i know that one day my wish will come true. I followd the 6 steps, and i wrote a letter to the Universe. I placed it in a envelope, and i closed the envelope. I put the letter next to my visionbord.
Here is my question, from the moment i watch my visionbord, i have a feeling in my belly for a few seconds. The feeling feels really good, it feels like butterfly’s. The same happens when i visualize my goal. But what means that feeling? Is that the feeling that i’me one the right frequence?

Thank you verry much Melody, keep up the good work.

Hugs from Dirk, Belgium

Tiffany Harper August 1, 2013 at 16:54

Hi Melody,

I just wanted to say thank you for this blog post. I read your post on July 22nd about writing a letter to the Universe and proceeded to write my letter that same day. I followed all of the steps outlined and even it a step further my mailing it. I was seeking a new home to move to since the current two bedroom apartment that my husband and I are renting with our two small children (Maddie 4 and Andie 9 months) was beginning to become too cramped for all of us. To add to that we just found out that we are expecting child number 3 so the desire to find larger and more affordable housing was very strong. So, I wrote the letter and expressed my worries and then wrote out what I knew I wanted to happen. On the 29th, 7 days after mailing my letter, I was inspired to do a search for houses for rent near my children’s daycare. At first I was resistant to it because I had just looked a few days ago and I found nothing but something kept pulling me to look any way. To my amazement I found a 3 bedroom, 2.5 bathroom, finished basement house, with covered carport on 0.5 acre just 2 minutes from my children’s daycare. I know all of this sounds great but it gets better. The owner of the house was asking for only $899 a month in rent. Naturally I wondered what was wrong with the house. I started to pass this opportunity by but again something said to call the number any way. I did and was delighted to talk to a very sweet and kind Indian man who believed strongly in helping people. He said that in addition to the low rent, he also believed in lowering the rent during the holidays and the months of children’s birthdays to help the family. We saw the house on the 29th and fell in love with its charm. I received a call from him on the 31st saying that he was interested in renting to us as long as our rental reference holds up from our current landlord. I am so thankful that I read this post on writing a letter to the Universe. I definitely will be doing this again to help me get clearer on other things that I want in my life. Thank you Universe and thank you Melody, you both rock and kick ass!

NewlyAwakened August 7, 2013 at 15:44

Hi Melody! Thanks so much for this post. Just yesterday I was asking my subconscious mind what I’m doing wrong, because for the past three months I have been believing the Universe for something special.

After viewing The Secret on You Tube in May, my wife and I immediately made our Vision Board, cut out and pasted things we desired to accomplish and possess. We possess and have read just about every book by Joseph Murphy, Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich, and Wallace Wattle’s The Science of Getting Rich.

Melody, I am not normally a man of faith, to “just believe”. But when I understood who I AM, I also realized that it is me who controls what happens in my life, and it is me who ordains what my experiences should be by my thoughts; it was a whole new ballgame. I truly believe that as a Divine Being, whatsoever I speak into existence and believe it shall happen, shall come to pass on the screen of space, in due time.

So since May 20, 2013 I have been meditating (I am finally up to 40 mins of “no thought” meditation) and I have been accessing my Divine Self. I have never felt anything like this in my life. The waves of warm, pulsating, amber light that encompasses my entire being is unexplainable. At times I speak in strange tongues, and although I have asked my subconscious mind what I am saying, I still don’t know, but it feels so darn good I keep at it anyways.

Soooo…although I have been diligent in sustaining my vision and believing, it has been almost three months from the date I started on this marvelous journey. And a few times it appeared as though the manifestation was right there, and I was FINALLY getting my creation; only for it not to materialize, but go to someone else.

Due to the fact that since I have never been a “dreamer” or one who fantasizes, my greatest challenge has been to envision what I want. I have never seen it crystal clear, just faintly- and try as I might, nothing has ever been “clear”. But the feelings that come from my thoughts leads me to believe that I am impressing my subconscious, even though it is not a movie in my head, as I’ve heard it must be.

So I got a little frustrated with the process, wondering what could I possible be doing wrong, if my faint envisioning is enough; and I came across this post, and the willies got in my belly and I knew this was my answer. Although I believed and had actually impressed my subconscious with my request (I know this because every time I think about the thing or meditate upon it, either the tongues spring up, I feel a warmth engulf my chest and body, or the willies get in my belly and make me giggle, and trust me, I’m not a giggler by nature ;-) ); I Never Completely Gave It To The Universe!!

I was still kinda holding onto it by “begging”, instead of just believing it was done and going about my business. I was truly obsessing over it to the point I was getting headaches from focusing and concentrating so much, and for long periods of time every day; and my vibratory level was so high I was only getting 2-3 hrs of sleep per night for the past near 3 months.

Sorry for such a long letter, but I was thrilled to find this tasty morsel of faith and how to apply it. I will write my letter, and burn it. But I already feel freer in my heart for this knowledge. Thank You!

I just wrote a letter to the Universe and now I feel great! I’ve been trying for some time now to trust in a positive future and to let go of my fears but I’ve never been really sure how to do it. This step-by-step letter writing method is EXACTLY what I needed at this time. Thank you for putting this up for people just like me.

Just sent off my universe letter. I really felt the relief when I listed all my fears first and my style of writing did go from past to present which I found so neat when I read it back! I even “feel” as though its already happened and I don’t have a feeling of “waiting” anymore. I just smile and go about my business. This really helped me and I hope to update you soon as it happens! Love your website!

Hi Melody,
Indeed a wonderful article. It works. Long back, I remember, whenever I was feeling shattered or confused or devastated on many things and engulfed with negative thoughts; I used to pen down each thought those were running in my mind, more like entangling / untying each knot; thereby making myself clear on the problem on hand and the various negative feelings / fears I had for them. I tried to explain the nitty-gritty of each thought in the more explainable format i.e. writing the same thing again and again in different way till I feel satisfied that I have justified my feeling. On doing this I immediately used to feel relax and enlightened as if I got a direction to move.
On reading your article, I recapitulate my practice and I am sure it’s going to help me in my manifestation process.

Thank You
DJ

Hi Melody,

Thank you so much for sharing this. For the last week I have been voicing my wants and needs out loud (actually pretty loudly and specifically, while my family is out so they don’t think i’m crazy!) because I just had this feeling like I needed to “send it out and put it out there in the universe.” This thought has been resonating with me so much that I googled the idea and was led here. I have already written my letter, sharing my fears and stresses, being specific and finally being thankful. I guess in reality the universe led me here today and I think I needed to write this powerful letter to the universe to really put it out there.

Thank you again!

Emi December 8, 2013 at 23:36

Hi Melody!
Thanks so much for your tips about this letter to the Universe! I’ve been trying to apply LOA in my life for about a year now, and it’s given me already many results but still I have a hard time focusing exactly on what I want (particularly regarding relationships) and letting go is certainly the most difficult thing to do. Today I’ve been very sad for something that happened yesterday, and while at the same time I as conforted by dear friends, I got sad again when I got home alone. And writing the letter made me feel better! I’ve even found in my notepad (where I’ve been trying to write affirmations and things related to positive thinking), an old drawing of myself, in which I made a sort-of autoportrait of me with a sad face… (This was made long ago, in 2009). And I sort of had a lucid moment in which I realized “hey, how can I avoid sadness if I’m keeping a drawing -however pretty it might be- of an autoportrait of me with a sad face!!”. So, I erased the mouth and eyebrows of the drawing (it was pencil) and drew instead a smile and happy eye-expression!! I hope it will be a little extra help when placing my order to the Universe! :)
Thanks again, and all the best for you and everyone here!!
